NBNA Statement on the Death of Alex Jeffrey Pretti
SILVER SPRING, MD — The National Black Nurses Association, Inc. (NBNA) stands in solidarity with the entire nursing community in mourning and condemning the tragic death of Alex Jeffrey Pretti, BS, RN, a 37-year-old Intensive Care Unit (ICU) nurse employed at the Minneapolis VA Health Care System in Minnesota, who was fatally shot during an encounter involving federal immigration enforcement agents. We offer our sincerest and most profound sympathies to Alex’s family, friends, colleagues, and everyone whose life was enriched by his presence.
NBNA joins the growing call for a full, independent, and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding this devastating loss of life. Accountability at all levels is essential to ensure justice and to restore public trust. Violence against individuals who are lawfully assembled and exercising their civic rights is unacceptable and demands immediate and meaningful corrective action.
The nursing profession is guided by a code of ethics that affirms our responsibility to advocate for the dignity, safety, and well-being of all people in the pursuit of health equity. This responsibility is especially urgent for communities that have been historically marginalized and for those who are currently facing heightened vulnerability and fear. Nurses across this nation, like Alex, serve not only as caregivers, but also as advocates for safer communities and safer working environments.
As we grieve this profound loss, NBNA remains steadfast in its mission and values as compassionate, humanistic healthcare professionals. We reaffirm our unwavering commitment to treating every individual with respect, dignity, and humanity, and to standing for justice in the face of actions that undermine those fundamental principles.
