STATEMENT OF THE NATIONAL DENTAL ASSOCIATION
The National Dental Association (NDA) strongly condemns the recent disparaging and dehumanizing remarks made by a professional wrestler toward former First Lady Michelle Obama.
Michelle Obama has served our nation with distinction, grace, intelligence, and a commitment to public service. As First Lady, she has championed initiatives that promoted healthy lifestyles, military family support, educational achievement, and opportunities for future generations. Her impact continues to extend far beyond politics and has inspired millions of Americans and people around the world.
The recent attacks directed at Mrs. Obama reflect a broader and troubling pattern condoned by the executive branch of our federal government in which accomplished Black women are subjected to disrespect, distortion, and efforts to diminish their humanity.
As healthcare professionals, we understand that health is influenced not only by clinical care but also by the social environment in which people live and work. Respect, inclusion, and human dignity are foundational principles of healthy communities.
Our profession has been strengthened by the contributions of countless Black women who serve as dentists, educators, researchers, administrators, advocates, community leaders, mothers, daughters, and mentors. Their leadership is indispensable, their voices matter, and their dignity must be protected.
The National Dental Association remains committed to advancing equity, promoting respect, and ensuring that future generations inherit a society where all people are valued and treated with dignity.
Therefore, we stand in solidarity with Michelle Obama and with Black women across this nation who continue to lead, serve, innovate, educate, and uplift their communities despite facing disproportionate criticism and scrutiny.
