Katrina State of Emergency : NDA Disaster Relief Efforts

What is the NDA Doing?

The NDA has mobilized and has been in the process of locating our members who were in the affected region of the country in order to more effectively help in their personal recovery efforts. Information obtained on our member’s status can be assessed via the national office and at our website: www.ndaonline.org. We are assisting in matching the specific short, intermediate and long term needs of each individual with the appropriate resources (individuals, websites, other dental professional organizations, and agencies). Some specific activities include:

· Compiling listings of impacted membership status and needs.
· Compiling resources listings of our membership who can assist in relocation efforts.
· Provide members with assistance in relocation efforts
· Providing links with other organizations and agencies assisting in relief efforts of dental professional colleagues and others impacted and or displaced by this disaster.
· Information on emergency provisional licensing is being compiled.
· Established an Disaster Relief Fund

What can You Do?

Many of you have contacted us asking how you can help those who have lost so much. We are pleased to tell you that we are now accepting donations for the NDA Disaster Relief Fund that will assist those affected by the storm. Your contributions can be made in these various methods. These contributions will be used to assist NDA family.

· If you have not done so already, please contact the NDA central office to inform us on resources you may have to contribute to the relief efforts. This includes space in your practice for displaced oral health providers and personnel, housing for displaced families, and school information.
· Continuously contact the national office with information on affected members and updates on their status.
· Contribute to the NDA Disaster Relief Fund.
· Actively aid in the recovery process for all affected and displaced persons through service and donations of church, civic and social organizations.
· Continuously pray for those affected.

The state of Tennessee has set up a website with instructions on expedited
review. Go to http://www.state.tn.us/health/ and click on Katrina relief.
It takes 24-48 hours to process.

Hurricane Katrina: Emergency Provisional Licensing [back to top]

The State Board of Dental Examiners (SBDE) has implemented procedures to issue emergency provisional licenses to dentists and dental hygienists currently licensed in Louisiana and/or Mississippi who have been displaced by Hurricane Katrina.

Qualifying for the license.

You may qualify for an Emergency Provisional License if you meet all of the following requirements:

You are a graduate of a CODA-accredited school of dentistry or dental hygiene in the United States, Canada, or Puerto Rico;
You are currently licensed in good standing in Louisiana and/or Mississippi as either a dentist or dental hygienist, with no history of disciplinary action against any license ever held in any jurisdiction;
You have, as a result of Hurricane Katrina, lost the ability to continue to practice and/or reside in Louisiana or Mississippi;
You submit a complete application and applicable fees to the SBDE.
