The Chair of the Department of Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics is a senior member of the School of Dental Medicine leadership team, and is responsible for overseeing and guiding the School’s Department of Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics.
The department works interdependently with other academic departments and administrative units advancing the mission of the School.
The Chair leads in interfacing with other Schools and Colleges of East Carolina University, with other components of the University of North Carolina System, and with the professional community.
The Chair provides oversight of the hiring, mentoring and professional development of departmental faculty. Within the pre-doctoral program, the Chair ensures the coordination of preclinical and clinical curriculum related to the department’s clinical disciplines, and fosters interprofessional collaboration.
The Chair provides general oversight for the Division of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics and the Division of Pediatric Dentistry including the Residency program, ensuring collaboration with the chairs and program directors of the advanced general dentistry residency program and general Practice residency programs to help provide orthodontic and pediatric dental education and training for residents in those programs.
Specific duties include:
- Collaborating with other members of the School’s senior leadership team to advance the educational, research and service mission of the School.
- Recruiting, hiring and mentoring the professional development of departmental faculty; coaching junior and senior faculty as they conduct research and undertake other scholarly pursuits that will help them qualify for appropriate promotion.
- Advocating for the school’s faculty practice plan and monitoring faculty participation.
- Working closely with the Office of Dental Education and Informatics in pre-doctoral curriculum development, implementation and assessment optimizing the use of technology to support the department’s teaching and clinical programs.
- Working closely with the Pediatric Dentistry Residency program in the ongoing development of the clinical and academic components of the residency program.
- Developing programs to involve dental students and residents in research activities.
- Coordinating clinical activities with the Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs, assisting with quality assurance and improvement and compliance efforts.
- Facilitating ongoing development and implementation of strong educational and clinical programs among all clinical disciplines within the department, within the school and at the Community Service Learning Centers.
- Working with faculty to develop and deliver state-of-the-art continuing education programs in the areas of Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics on a regional, statewide and, where possible, nation-wide basis.
- Coordinating accreditation and other program documentation, as needed.
- Representing the Department and School at appropriate University and Vidant Medical Center meetings, with state and federal governmental agencies, with professional associations and other external constituencies.
- Participating in budget planning and administration for the Department, ensuring that staffing, equipment, and funding are appropriate for the mission requirements.
- Performing other duties and assuming additional responsibilities as assigned by the Dean.
The chair position is a faculty position and is available at the rank or title of Assistant Professor or higher, fixed- term or tenure- track.
- DDS or DMD (or equivalent) from a CODA-accredited institution.
- Eligibility for dental licensure in North Carolina (a full NC dental license or teaching license must be secured within two months of employment).
- American Board certification in Pediatric Dentistry and/or Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics.
- Broad knowledge of issues in dental education.
- Commitment to the general practice model of dental education.
- Minimum of seven years of experience in dental education at the institutional level, working in development, implementation, evaluation and monitoring of departmental programs leading to the dental degree, with a demonstrated record of increasing leadership responsibilities.
- Commitment to and evidence of building teams in planning and to identify and resolve problems.
- Commitment to the mission of the School of Dental Medicine and to the Community Service Learning Center educational model.
Preferred Education and Experience:
- Experiences as a program director, division head, or chair preferred.
- Commitment to evidence-based teaching and practice.
- Experience in the business aspects of practice – patient relations, staffing, and fiscal management.
- Experience in postgraduate specialty education.
- Experience in community outreach activities.
- Experience with digital record keeping, imaging, and grading.
- Well organized, able to plan ahead and adaptable to a dynamic, changing environment requiring the ability to juggle a variety of competing demands and priorities.
- Demonstrated strong leadership, administrative, and management skills.
- Evidence of strong and persuasive presentation skills.
- A vision for shaping the future of the school and capable of accepting new challenges and developing programs and/or services from start to finish.
- A strategic leader who can identify and capitalize on organizational, academic, and financial opportunities to benefit the Department of Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics and the School.
